Without mentoring by a qualified mentor (rare), while it is possible to self-learn to master E2E test automation, failure is very likely.

One common question I received was, “Zhimin, How long does it take to learn Web Test Automation?”

It is not easy to answer because it depends on the asker’s expectations: Learn enough to be useful or Mastery that can work fully independently. Let me clarify with a metaphor.

Metaphor: “How long does it take to learn to drive a car?” and “How long does it take to drive independently?”

In Queensland (Australia), the process of getting a driver’s licence is below.

• Get a Learner’s permit after passing a written road rules test.

An important note: by law, a new learner can hands-on drive a car pretty much on day 1, but he/she must be accompanied by an experienced driver, preferably a professional driving instructor.

• Learn and Practice
  - for a minimum of 12 months
  - you can get in a car and drive (with someone, e.g. your parent or driving coach)
  - logged 100 hours of driving (including 10 hours of night driving)
  - you get bonus log book hours for driving lessons (with a qualified driving coach): 1 hr = 3 hrs.

• Pass the road test and get a P1 probationary licence.
  - you can drive independently.

• Get a P2 probationary license after a minimum of 12 months without incident.

• Get an Open license after holding your P2 license for at least two years.

So, back to the how-long question. The answer depends.

1. Basic driving skills can be learned in hours. (We all know that)
   After passing the written test, you can immediately start driving on the roads, accompanied by an experienced driver.

2. To drive somewhat independently, at least 12 months (in time) and 100 hours of logged hours, and pass the road test.

3. To drive with total independently without any constraints, at least three years.

The above is about everyday driving. For pros, like in the “Fast and Furious” movies, it will take much more practice and even talent.
