3. “I don’t want to pay for training or mentoring. Is there another way to learn and master E2E test automation?”
Sure — it’s absolutely feasible, but less effective. I did that practically myself.
Back in 2005, I briefly pair-programmed with a world-renowned developer (whom I later regarded as my mentor, even though our engagement lasted only six weeks). During that short period, I saw real E2E test automation (as well as other agile and good programming practices) for the first time and studied his E2E test scripts in my own time, because while we were working together, we were fully occupied implementing user stories.
That world-renowned programmer simply opened my mind to E2E test automation. Today, achieving the same clarity is far easier—you only need to read a few of my articles and book a 30-minute 1-on-1 coaching session with me to see it real, for just $1.
After that, I taught myself E2E test automation from scratch with a new framework Watir (then Selenium) and a new scripting language: Ruby. For nearly two years, I researched and practiced every night. Remember, this was before YouTube/Medium existed, resources were limited, and long before Zoom or Google Meet — there was no such thing as finding a mentor online.
You might be a better self-learner, especially now, with so many resources available. You could reach a solid level in six months to a year (practices are essential, regardless). But with a mentor, you can get there much faster and avoid unnecessary detours.
4. “I am determined to learn E2E, but lack resources…, can you help?”
Many software testers contacted me for help (see dozens of examples here). From what I’ve observed, most struggled not because of a lack of resources—there are plenty available, often free or very low-cost—but because they lack the determination to follow through.
Here is an interesting example. This “senior functional QA analyst” is ‘so ready’ to become my mentee.
However, after I replied, “You can start with $1 for a 30-minute session,” I never heard back from her. Apparently, somehow she thinks test automation experts are supposed to mentor her to grow (earn more money) for free on demand. Although it goes against common sense—like naturally paying for your child’s piano or tennis lessons—it’s striking that many software professionals won’t invest even $1 in their own professional growth.
Paid training or mentoring isn’t strictly necessary to master E2E test automation, but it is a tremendous leverage. Since most people aren’t willing to spend even $1, investing a small amount (which is also tax-deductible) can give you a significant edge.
Some readers may feel encouraged by the above because they take action and therefore outperform the dreamers who don’t.
Back to the question. Yes, there is a not out-of-pocket option to access a test automation mentor: “Convince your company to engage one”. Check out this article, “Software Side Hustler Tip: My “Hit Two Birds With One Stone” Secret — Excel both day job and side projects. Part 4: Advice”.
